The premier department of nursing in Nigeria, the Department of Nursing, University of Ibadan On Thursday, 4th June conducted an induction ceremony for twenty-four 2013/2014 graduands of the department.

The induction ceremony which was held at the prestigious Paul-Hendrickse Hall at the University College hospital (UCH) Ibadan was preceeded by a pre-induction dinner which held on Wednesday, June 3rd at the Provost’s Conference room ,Faculty Building, UCH.

The induction ceremony which was the third of its kind represents the acceptance of the Nursing students who the University has found to be worthy in character and learning and have as well successfully concquered the dreaded National Nursing Council  examination officially into the Nursing profession and declared free to practice anywhere in the world!.

The induction programme which also coincides with the 50th anniversary of the department was held in a grand style featuring a well befitting pre-induction dinner with the college officials led by the provost himself which held a day before the Induction day proper as well as the first induction lecture titled “Nursing Practice and Law in the Current Health-Care Delivery System in Nigeria” delivered by the law veteran, Oluwadurotimi Akeredolu (SAN).

The about 4-hour long programme also featured the induction of 24 nursing professionals consisting of 10 of the new graduands among others into the Sigma Theta Tau International honor society of Nursing marking the first of its kind in University of Ibadan since the inauguration of the organization’s Babcock University sub chapter.

The 2013/2014 set of graduands who tagged themselves as “The Champions” was championed by Mrs Oluwajana Yetunde who stood out as the best graduating student of the class. She received the best graduating student award and special hand shake from the provost, UCH chief medical director (represented by the CMAC) and the Vice Chancellor(represented by DVC Admin.) amongst others. Mrs Oluwajana while speaking on behalf of the class in her valedictorian speech seized the medium to appreciate all lecturers and members of staffs that contributed to the success of their set and also advised the students remaining in the department to endure and work hard!.

Meanwhile, the annual Provost Award for Community Service organized to reward special students who have demonstrated leadership skills and served the University community was won by Mr Bola Babatunde Afeez and Miss Akindele Moyosore who were once president and vice-president respectively to the Nigerian University Nursing Students’ Association(UI chapter) and had well represented the department in different capacities during their sojourn in the University. Unfortunately, Mr Bola Babatunde, the only male student in the class, as well as two other graduands were unavoidably absent at both pre-induction dinner and the Induction ceremony proper due to compulsory resumption at NYSC camp which coincided with the induction date.

The programme ended with goodwill messages from the two Invited Nursing Elders; Mama Moturayo Ayodele Tubi who was once the Head of department of Nursing (1979-1986) and Dr Rasidi Salawu who is also an alumni of the department and was once a lecturer in the department.

The programme was well attended by family and friends, relatives and well-wishers. The turn-out of nursing students was however low ( probably because school was on break) as only a handful of students were present. Other dignitaries present at the programme include the president of the Graduate Nurses Association of Nigeria, the Nursing and Midwifery Council Registrar, among others.

The 2013/2014 induction of “The Champions” was rounded up with music, entertainment and “Item Seven” after several hours of long lectures and official routines.
