“INTERESTED STUDENTS FREE TO ATTEND HANDOVER CEREMONY” – UI MANAGEMENT

The generality of the students of the University of Ibadan have been told they are free to attend the handover ceremony of the Students’ Union which the Management scheduled for Thursday, 16th June, 2016 at the University Senate Chamber.

This is meant to allay the fears of many a UIte that the scheduled handover is another means by the University management to alienate students from their Union.

According to Sunday Saanu, the Media Assistant to the Vice Chancellor, “all interested bonafide students of this University are free to attend the programme”. This is contained in a post published on his Facebook timeline few hours ago.

The reason for the unavailability of Trenchard Hall, the traditional venue for the programme, according to Saanu, was because it had earlier been booked for another equally important event.

“In as much as the University Management would appreciate a large turnout of students at the event, the choice of the Senate Chamber has become inevitable since Trenchard Hall had earlier been booked and paid for to host the birthday celebrations of a very senior and much respected member of the community,” the post adds.

Also worthy of note is the University Management’s emphasis on its exclusive power to determine the date of the swearing-in ceremony for the Students’ Union.

The outgoing President, Olateju Aliyu Oladimeji in a chat with UCJUI also maintained that the management has the sole responsibility to determine the date of the hand-over ceremony.

He however stated that contrary to the rumour circulating, he was not afraid to boycott the hand-over ceremony or do anything to contradict the Management’s directive and that if anything of such would happen, it would have to be with the consent of the incoming executive members.
