CHRONICLES OF U.I: THE SLOW BUT SURE DESTROYER

Hearing the cause of death of the late Muyiwa a 200lvl, student of kinetic and health education gave me shivers because it occurred to me that my youngerbrother was prone to respiratory attacks while growing up. So, I imagined what would happen to me and my family if it was my own flesh and blood indear Mayowa’s shoes. Any family would be in disarray. But as I got to hear the full circumstance that lead to his death, my pity was replaced with anger. It wasn’t anger towards the government. In the contrary, it was anger towards the negligence and selfishness of humanitybecause it is people and not animalsthat make up the Government.

Yes! I am mad ass angry.Am raging mad at the medical workers of the University of Ibadan medical clinic – JAJA clinic – For being so inhumane and negligent. Tell me, what excuse cana nurse or Doctor give for not attending to an innocent boy with a simple “treatable” respiratory issue?Damn! I even heard that the so-called doctor who initially refused to attend to the boy because his shift was up; was the same one who came to officially pronounce him dead. What audacity!

This is not the first time they have been careless with the health of their patients which are made up of 80percent students. Hell! You can ask almost any student in U.I and you are sure to get pathetic story of JaJa medical officials portraying “I don’t care” attitudes and even prescribing wrong medications/treatments that lead to complications. To be sincere though, they are just doing what government workers have been engaging in for years. Yes! I am talking of those employed by the government of this country. I am referring to the average man.

I stand to be corrected but from the experience I have had so far, I realize that an average government worker –both the minimum wage workers and top officials- Don’t give a dime about their work/duties. Most don’t care to carry out their official duties talkess of effectively doing it. Some don’t even resume at their places of work except when they feel like. To them it is not their fathers work + the pay isn’t worth it. So, “why do it?” But I ask “why not do it, even well? Is anything worth doing at all not worth doing well?”“If it so inconveniences you to work, why not leave the job for some one better instead of jeopardizing the work?”

A very ridiculous level of un-seriousness and negligence is prevalent in government offices all over my dear country Nigeria. In public schools and some federal institutions, you would see workers – even when paid- use periods meant for impacting valuable educational knowledge into learners (of any level) to engage in frivolous activities. Some even turn their offices into business centres and we wonder why the educational quality of this country is going down the drain. The same goes for most government institutions.

Some of these workers when questioned on their lackadaisical attitudes give reasons ranging from lack of equipment or facilities to infrequent payment of salaries. But I ask “Who failed to maintain the present equipment and tools?” “Who mismanaged the funds allocated for payment of salaries and maintenance?”  It is government officials like you. Infact, it is our neighbours, friends and families that we see every day that are at fault.

Now, this article is not just meant for finger pointing and guilt blaming. It is meant to open our korokoro eyes to the fact that our selfishness, negligence and greediness is to be blame. We, only care about ourselves and give no f**k for others. That is why medical personnel would prescribe wrong medications, engage in frivolous things like eating while a life is on stake, and insist on collecting money/silly check in procedures when a patient is in a critical stage.

It is also the reason why patient would become a burden to a medical institution by refusing to register at the appropriate time, carry out required tests and check-up, refuse to pay bills after treatment and even leave the hospital after recovery(this one is hilarious). Never the less, I still believe in the Nigeria; we are blessed but are too self-centred. I write this with a “very” heavy heart but hope for a future with positive result and change.
