How Coronavirus has affected the worldwide Entertainment Industry

Coronavirus otherwise known as COVID 19 is a very deadly virus. According to, there are 155,812 cases and 5,814 Deaths from COVID-19 around the world. China, Iran and Italy are presently the countries with the highest coronavirus cases.

The coronavirus has led to the shutdown of many sporting events most notably, the Premier League, the Spanish La Liga. Italy Serie A, the French Ligue 1, the Major League Soccer, the German Bundesliga, the Australian Formula 1 Grand prix, ATP world tour, NBA season and many other major sporting events. Many other major social events have also been called off. Business wise, it also has crippling events on the stock market of countries around the globe.

The entertainment industry has also not been spared from the spread of this deadly virus. This article will focus on how coronavirus has negatively affected the entertainment industry. The most recent effect that we all must have heard is the recent postponement of Fast and Furious 9 to 2021. It was put back 11 months. The movie was set to be released in May but will now not hit the cinemas until April 2021. This is not only sad news for the fans of the franchise but the producers and the actors themselves. According to a statement released by them “it’s become clear that it won’t be possible for all of our fans around the world to see the film this May”.

Movies like A Quiet place 2, No time to die and Peter Rabbit 2 and many others have also had their release dates postponed. Moving to actors and actresses, Popular Oscar-winning American actor Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson have tested positive for coronavirus while they were in Australia. It was a big shock to the acting world. The Celebrity power couple remains for now the highest profile actor and actress to have been infected with Coronavirus.

Notable theatres like Broadway theatres have shut down after the New York state governor, Andrew Cuomo, banned gatherings of more than 500 people. They announced they would shut down immediately and not operate till April 12. This year’s edition of Tribeca Film Festival a very popular American film festival held in the Tribeca neighbourhood of Manhattan was postponed indefinitely due to Coronavirus. All major entertainments events like Kids choice awards that was scheduled to hold in Los Angeles and popular California music festival Coachella was also postponed till November. Disneyland is expected by many to announce plans to close its gates to guest in Florida for the rest of the month. Capital one’s Jamfest scheduled to hold on April 5 was also cancelled

Live television programs i.e. the jimmy Kimmel show and the Late show with James Corden and many other TV shows announced that they will taping without Live audiences. This can be said to be as result on the ban preventing gatherings of 250 people or more.

India entertainment industry is also facing major challenges. Many theatres in India will reportedly lose Rs2 lakh to 10 lakhs without gaining a single lakh. This particularly cut across all theatres in all nations of the world. Since most movies released dates has been moved further forward, very soon major cinemas or theatres around the world will run out of interesting movies to show.  Even presently, most of them especially in Europe and far East Asia are running at a loss.

Many musicians have postponed their concerts and tours. Celine Dion postponed her courage world tour scheduled for March and April. As of now. New dates have not been announced.  Billie Ellish, Lionel Richie also postponed their shows. Quavo and popular music acapella group Pentatonix also announced cancellation of their tours/concerts.

Hollywood and the American Entertainment Industry is a major worldwide entertainment brand. With this stringent measures, it is not only affecting the people involved in Hollywood alone but most parts of the world. Hollywood movie industry has practically become the world biggest movie industry. The American Entertainment Industry is arguably the biggest and best entertainment industry in the world. This is the major reason why most of the instances contained in this article are from their industry. They have a major grasp on the global entertainment industry. The Coronavirus has been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organisation. It has affected so many things we love, affected some people we care about be it celebrities or no celebrities, killed so many people. It has made the world more boring and dangerous to live in. We can only hope and pray that the coronavirus pandemic will be gone as quickly as possible. Let us all endeavour to follow all guidelines given to tackle and prevent coronavirus. May God be with us all and deliver us all from this deadly virus. This writer’s thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this virus around the globe.
