In the early hours of Sunday morning, a theft attempt was foiled by an alarm raised by an occupant of one of the rooms in Block C of Lord Tedder Hall. The first thief who was apprehended after the alarm was raised is reportedly among a 3-man gang notorious for theft in the University of Ibadan. The second thief was caught hiding at the Catholic Church shortly after his accomplice revealed his whereabouts.
According to several reports, the thieves reside at Abadina area of the University of Ibadan and often frequent areas such as the Catholic Church, Mellanby Hall and Lord Tedder Hall.
The Defence Minister of Lord Tedder Hall, Mr. Daniel Oyekan, said the first thief gained access to the hall by presenting himself as a final year student to a member of the defence team at the hall gate who was standing guard in absence of the porters due to the ongoing NASU/SSANU strike action. The thief then made his way to Block C where he stole two phones before an alarm was raised, and was subsequently caught.
Residents of the hall who responded to the alarm were on the verge of beating the two thieves to a pulp before they were halted by members of the University Security Unit.
Mr. Oyekan also revealed that the two phones which were stolen by the thieves had been recovered and would be returned to the owners soon pending an investigation by the security unit was concluded.
