The Nigerian music industry is arguably the biggest and the most rapidly growing music industry in Africa. A lot of investors, both indigenous and foreign, are trooping in to this market with each tick of the clock. Some of the biggest of record companies in the world like Sony music, Atlantic, RCA and Universal Music have followed suit in hopes of enjoying the blessing of this gracious industry. But for these investors to be able to reap the fruit of their entrepreneurial seed, the need for a paradigm-shift in the level of dexterity in our crafts and the level of professionalism in the business aspect is crucial.

            Many beneficiaries have complained of the absence of structure in the industry, how things are in disarray; concerts, music sales, royalties and the laws guiding record deals are not standardized. In recent times, the issue of record deals has been pumping in a lot of bad-blood into the heart of this industry.  Since, the day of Brymo and Chocolate City, the Nigerian music has recorded series of allegations of breach of contract. Now, disturbing the industry is the feud between the Afro-pop singer Kizz Daniel and estranged former label, G-worldwide Entertainment.

            On December 13, 2019, Olisa Agbakoba (SAN) who serves as the legal representative of Emperor Gezzy Record label worldwide entertainment limited informed members of the press that the Afro-Pop Singer, Kizz Daniel will not perform at his December 26, 2019 concert. His reason is that the artist’s brand still belongs to his former label. Although Kizz Daniel now releases music under his own label, Flyboy Inc. but has a pending matter at the High Court to determine the state of his contract with G-Worldwide.

            When Olisa Agbakoba spoke, he said his client wants to make an example of Kizz Daniel to artists who want to breach the terms of their record contracts. He said, “The press conference is to call attention to the fact that artists or labels think they can do what they like, it will have to stop and Kizz Daniel represents the loving example of how the rules of the industry are not being followed”.  ‘We have to stop it…We are going to apply an injunction to stop the show because he is tied to us and the matter is in court and if it is in court, the court has to decide, so we are going to ask the court to stop the show”

“Next year, we are going to take the strongest possible measures against Kizz Daniel until he comes back and repents and pays us what he owes us”. G-worldwide has put out a claim of N500 M as compensation from Kizz Daniel. “it’s our claim not about what the Kizz Daniel is worth. This is about what the company would have made over the period of the 7 years’ contract. So, it’s not just a sum based on what he’s now worth, said the renowned legal practitioner.
