On the 14th and 15th of November 2019, the Political Science Students Committee, under the Distance Learning Center (DLC), University of Ibadan, in conjunction with Zenith bank, Google and Haptics held a digital skills training at the Distance Learning Center (DLC), University of Ibadan.
The convener of the training, Mr. Ibekwe Simeon, a member of the Political Science Student Committee stated that the event is the first of its kind, and its purpose is to enlighten both students and business owners on how to make good use of digital tools as well as have digital skills in order to develop both their businesses and careers.
Mr. Ibekwe also added that the free online accredited certificates which would be given to every attendee, would serve as an avenue of boosting their CVs and also their LinkedIn profiles.
The two-day event which had an encouraging turnout was spiced with google officials who familiarized the attendees with google digital tools, and Zenith bank officials who assisted in opening free accounts for interested attendees.
Also speaking at the event was the Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Oluwole Oluwasegun, who stated that the event would help to “facilitate social and academic activities for the benefit of students and business owners.”
He also stated that the digital skill acquisition program would serve as a medium of bridging the gap between the Distance Learning students and the regular students of the University of Ibadan, as it has been observed that young people are now being admitted into the DLC alongside the working class adults. This medium according to him would assist in bringing on-campus happenings closer to the students of the distance learning centre and exposing them to other activities aside academics and work.
