In a civilized country where democracy is being practiced, a leader elected into power is expected to appoint people who will work hand in hand with him to achieve a common goal. It is expected that all members of the cabinet should be people of integrity. Although the President reserves the right to appoint people based on His own discretion and judgment. This is however expected to be done without delay so that work can begin efficiently.
However, President Muhammadu Buhari has delayed in announcing the members of the new cabinet of a government that has started over a month ago. According to an interview with the Secretary- General of the Conference of Nigerian Political parties (CNPP) Chief Willy Ezugwu, he said the delay of the president is hurting the polity and it means the President can run the government alone doing whatever he wants without the assistance of a knowledgeable and skillful cabinet.
He also said that the list of cabinet members should have been made long before his election into power.
News from The Guardian newspaper says that based on information gotten from very authoritative sources one of the factors delaying the selection list is the serious internal intrigues rocking the ruling party(APC), which has caused the President to prevaricate.
It was gathered that the Southwest zone is where intrigues are most contentious and the intra – party rivalry vicious . Some people are of the opinion that Buhari , and indeed the Presidency may have decided to keep the ministerial list discreet in order to fence the likes of National Leader of APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu , and stop them from having undue influence and advantage .
However, based on the premise that the President must pick cabinet members from the six geo-political zones in the country. Governors and leaders within the ruling party have begin to suggest candidates from their state.
Amidst all these, the opposing party (The People’s Democratic Party PDP) has said that this delay in the announcement of the cabinet is only a confirmation of the incompetence and failure of the present administration.
