BLEND OF ELEGIES AND DIRGES
(Compost Words for Posterity)

Let’s write an elegy
for the funeral of expressions
taking its thundering toll
on our fledgling thoughts.

Let’s sing a dirge
for the carnival of fear
blowing the music of cowardice
upon the shaky stage of our hearts.

Let’s write an elegy
for the lost mettle in our voice,
for the charred remains of our hopes
dipped wholly into the bullying inferno
of moral decrees.

Let’s sing a dirge
for this earth choking on corpses of struggles,
this land flooded with the blood of slain protests,
this atmosphere taking a new cloak of name,
becoming: hearts-must-fear.

Let’s make a blend of elegies and dirges,
squeeze their tasteless juice into rotting bowls,
make a compost of the experiences forced down our memories,
and await another growth of tongues in posterity’s pouch.
