Two University of Ibadan students, Ify Okoh and Oladosu Halimah, who are postgraduate students of the Departments of Statistics and Computer Science respectively alongside two counterparts of theirs who formed Team X came third in the recently concluded Women in Science Datathon wherein 203 teams partook.
The competition, a datathon is a data-focused hackathon given a dataset and a limited time, participants are challenged to use their creativity and data science skills to build, test and explore solutions.
A model that predicts the presence of oil palm plantations in satellite imagery was created. The dataset images are 3-meter spatial resolution, and each is labeled with as whether an oil palm plantation appeared in the image or not. 0 represents no plantation while 1 represents presence of a plantation.
