On Saturday, 22nd of September, 2018 Mellanby Hall Press Organisation (MHPO) notched the first position in the Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan (UCJUI) annual Prof. Egbokhare inter-press debate competition. The competition which was held alongside the induction of new members of the Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan occured in the Large lecture theatre(LLT), Faculty of the Social Sciences, University of Ibadan.
The Prof. Egbokhare debate competition which was doggedly contested by three press organizations was preceded by an essay competition that had entries from different local press organisations among which four local press with the best essays proceeded to the final round. At the final round were Adhikr press, Mellanby Hall Press Organization and Independence Hall Press Organisation.
In absence of Law press, Adhikr press represented by Miss. Omisore Kwarthar and Mr. Adeniyi Ridwan one-sidedly debated the topic – “The not too young to run bill: our hope or another hoard”, while Mellanby press represented by Mr. Adeyemi Ayeku and Mr. Akinlaja Felix against Indy press represented by Mr. Adedayo Henry Vick and Miss. Olopade Oluwatosin debated the topic – “The National Youth Service Corp: a necessity for the 21st century Nigeria?”
Due to the absence of the fourth contestant, Law Press Organization who was suppose to debate against Adhikr press, the performance of the participants was decided by the overall highest score which proceeded Mellanby press and Indy Press to the impromptu stage. At this stage which marked the end of the debate competition, Mellanby press defeated Her opponent to notch the first prize of the competition as Indy press claimed the second prize while Adhikr press claimed the third prize.
