On Thursday, 10th of May, the Sigma Club, University of Ibadan held a press conference with the Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan (UCJ UI) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall Senior Common Room.
The press conference which started behind schedule around 5:30pm had in attendance the Sigma chief – Valentinus Igbonekwu and other principal officers of Sigma club, the president of UCJ UI, some other pressmen as well as observers.
During the Sigma chief’s address, he announced among other things the birth of a scholarship scheme “to help indigent but diligent University undergraduates complete their studies….” The said scholarship shall be awarded to 10 undergraduate students of UI and the worth is fixed at One Hundred thousand naira (#100,000) per benefiacry and each beneficiary will be entitled to it throughout their undergraduate years. He read in conclusion by announcing that the Board of Trustees of Sigma Scholarship Scheme has been inaugurated on Sunday, April 29, 2018.
In another wave of the philanthropic nature of Sigma club, the annual tertiary essay competition which started in the 2015/2016 Sigma year will continue this year. The topic for this year’s essay topic has been decided to be: “Mass killing of unarmed citizens in Nigeria – A proposal to legalize personal arms: right or wrong?” The call for entries shall commence on May 15, 2018 and the awards are as follows: 1st prize -100,000; 2nd prize – 70,000; 3rd prize – 30,000
